A new wave of erotic films are on their way. It started at the Venice Film Festival and is carrying on at Toronto. B oth "Baby Girl" (with Nicole Kidman, who just won the best actress Volpi Award) and "Disclaimer" (a seven-part TV series by Alfonso Cuarón) open with orgasms, while "Queer" (Luca Guadagnino’s new film) shows plenty of skin but focus on real intimacy. According to THR, there is a revival of the 80’s and 90’s "Basic Instinct", "Fatal Attraction" and "Body of Evidence" in the air.

Romantic Love Is Out

Premiering at TIFF, "Paying For It" explores the idea that sex isn’t natural, but rather a learned behavior. Set in the 90s, the Sook Yin-Lee movie plays with the idea of sex as a human behavior detached from romance or monogamy (Variety). Intercourse with others being the main rediscovery of a sexless couple.

New Dynamics

Meanwhile, a wave of gap-romance films has also been changing the big picture about the rom-com scene, with "Lonely Planet", "The Idea Of You" and "A Family Affair" – all films in which women (Laura Dern, Anne Hathway and Nicole Kidman, respectively) are significantly older than their love interests – and enjoy sex. A plot twist for women who think men should always be older (Fox News).

Less is More

Last April, there was an infamous twitter post about a possible “skip the foreplay scenes”, a suggested feature on Netflix that would eliminate sex scenes for families to feel more comfortable watching it together (more on Independent). An UCLA research found out that Gen Z wants less sex scenes in their content, as Variety reports - "Bridgeton" being the first series the “skip the skin” button would be used on.

Thermometer

One thing is evident: with the end of Summer in the northern hemisphere, temperatures are set to go up on the screens. Erotic tropes are definitely back, but for a specific audience only.

With the niche culture, content creators and distributors need to pay closer attention to their metrics. We are here to help you.

Cheers,

Laura
