The recent success of "Shogun", the first non-English TV show to win Best
Drama at the Emmys, highlights a significant shift in the American entertainment
industry's approach to non-US content. The series made history, winning four
major awards: Best Drama, Best Drama Actor, Best Drama Actress, and Best
Drama Directing. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, the stars of the show,
became the first Japanese actors to ever win Emmys, marking a groundbreaking
moment for Asian representation (more on THR).
International Emmy
Outside of the domestic Television Academy, the International Emmy have been
home to all non-US content for 52 years. In the 2024 edition, the award will
include 21 countries in 14 categories, the UK being the front runner and English
language still being the most predominant one (full list on Deadline).
Nevertheless, many highlights from other countries are expected to set new
benchmarks. The Indian remake of "The Night Manager" (Disney + Hotstar),
originally a British show based on a John Le Carré novel that won three Golden
Globes back in 2017, is one of the top contenders (Forbes).
From Theatrical to TV
Another highlight of this year's International Emmy is the Directorate Award that
Gaumont CEO, Sidonie Dumas, will receive. Responsible for series such as
"Lupin", "Narcos", "Becoming Karl Lagerfeld" and "The Interpreter of Silence",
Sidonie has successfully helped Gaumont pivot their main business from
theatrical to television (read about it on THR)
Comedy & Drama
On the US front, David E. Kelley will receive the Emmy Founder's award for his
long and outstanding contribution to the television media (more on Deadline).
From "L.A. Law" to "Big Little Lies", Kelley is the only producer to ever win the
Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy ("Ally McBeal") and Outstanding Drama
("The Practice") in the same year, 1999.

We are pleased to announce that the TV Series "Anderson Spider Silva", in which
I was the script doctor, is nominated for best TV Movie/Mini-series at the
International Emmys. The Brazilian TV show follows the story of the iconic UFC
fighter from poverty to stardom in five episodes, and is available on Paramount+.
